This weekend Pavs 1stxv travelled away to Oadby Wyggestonians for the last Midlands One league game of the 2018/19 season. Both sides have big things to play for in the weeks ahead ( finals, playoffs etc), so this particular fixture was not influential on much apart from preparing for the challenges ahead. As it turned out, it was a topsy turvy affair with supremacy being swapped on a number of occasions. Both sides had periods of ascendancy only to lose them in a repetitively cyclical series of up and downs which were much enjoyed by the crowd if not the coaches.
From the kick off OW’s attacked the game with vim and vigour. Accordingly, they scored two quick tries in the opening minutes to take a 10-0 lead. This seemed to galvanise Pavs into action with youngsters Will Taylor (2) and Tom Winning scoring in a mad six minutes to give Pavs what seemed to be a dominant lead at 21-10. Of course, this was not to last and OW’s narrowed the gap to 21-17 on thirty four minutes. Late in the half, hooker Cal Mason finished off a well organised lineout drive and wing Alex Barton sprinted in the give Pavs a 33-17 lead at the break.
After the break, Ollie Collingham extended Pavs lead to 40-17. As we had come to expect this dominance was unfortunately was not to last. On sixty minutes, OW’s staged a fightback of epic proportions. To be fair, Pavs made a series of changes and perhaps a degree of complacency had replaced the previous intensity. OW’s scored three quick tries of their own to bring the score to 40-36 on seventy four minutes. In the dying minutes, OW’s were awarded a penalty which was kicked into the corner and during the last play of the game went over between the post to secure a 43-40 win.
So another league season draws to a close. Pavs finish in second and OW’s in third in Midlands One. Next Saturday (20/04/19), Pavs go on to play Bridgford in the NLD/Notts Cup Final at Nottingham RFC’s Lady Bay ground. The following week (27/04/19) Pavs take on Dudley Kingswinford at home in the Midlands One Playoff with promotion to Midlands Premier at stake. All support from old and new friends is welcomed in what is sure to be a challenging period. Onwards…………
